Welcome to the Sandbox!!
Come to this innovative interpreter training series “Application and Experimentation” beginning Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 9:00AM to noon.
Local interpreters will guide the monthly sessions by explaining the interpreting skill and its nuances. They will provide examples through written, audio and visual tests for participants to gain a foundation for future self-assessment.
The skill being developed will be chosen from Marty Taylor’s books Interpretation Skills: American Sign Language to English and Interpretation Skills: English to American Sign Language. There will also be some surprise topics as well – the main focus is to improve our work.
The first session “Semantics of Vocabulary” working from English to ASL (p.29 #18.A), the participants will learn to identify vocabulary miscues, discuss how to assess their own work and work with a stimulus to create an interpreted work for self-examination.
Participants are encouraged to bring:
- a visual recording device: flip camera, iphone, ipad, or video camera
- a laptop computer (This will aide in viewing your filmed work.)
- a designated notebook for this series.
Certified and Pre-Certified Deaf and Hearing Interpreters are invited to attend as well as Advanced ASL students.
Areas outside of Anchorage are encouraged to join in these skill development sessions by forming local groups. The workshop intro will be videotaped and sent to participating groups. We will also send a list of materials that are used for discussion and stimulus.
Please contact Anne Dawson dawson@asdawson.com or Su Isakson talking.hands.interpreting@gmail.com if you are interested and would like more details.
CEUs will be offered at a cost of $30.00 per 3 hour session.
