Two Sides of the Same Coin: Hearing and Deaf Interpreters’ Understanding of the CPC

Naomi conducted a research study investigating Deaf interpreters’ ethical decision-making process and preliminary findings indicate that they have a different view of the RID Code of Professional Conduct (CPC) from hearing interpreters - largely influenced by their Deaf extralinguistic knowledge (DELK). An idea stemmed from this study that a workshop should be conducted for hearing and Deaf interpreters to convene and discuss their interpretation of the CPC tenets.

In this workshop, Naomi will be sharing some details from her research, including some real-life situations for the participants to assess. A selection of CPC tenets will be highlighted for the participants to discuss what each means from the hearing and Deaf view and why. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of an ongoing discussion of how Deaf and hearing interpreters may approach ethical decisions differently and improve better understanding and collaboration in Deaf-hearing interpreting teams.

Presenter Bio

Naomi Sheneman, M.A., M.S., CDI & ASLTA-Professional, has been working professionally in the interpreting profession since 2000 in different roles including interpreter, trainer, mentor, supervisor, diagnostician and consultant. She is currently working as the Kaizen Director for Network Interpreting Service and is a doctoral candidate at Gallaudet University in the Interpretation program in the Research Track. She developed Interpreting Diagnostic Assessment Rubrics (ASL-English/ English-ASL) with Marilyn K. Mitchell which was reprinted in Gordon, P. & Magler, M. (2007) The Mentor’s Companion.
